Reina Says: Listen to Your Inner Girl
Girls rock.
Of course they do! You remember back when you were 12 or 13? Remember how much fun you had? You sang aloud to your Walkman and danced crazily around your room, shaking that moth-eaten feather boa your grandmother gave you and pretending you were a famous rock star. You posed for pictures with expressions of disdain or surprise or disgust, contorting your face and giggling all the time at how funny you thought the picture would turn out.
But girls grow up. They become women. They give the feather boa to Goodwill, only do karaoke when drunk, and dance in measured movements while looking at their feet.
Spiritual teacher don Miguel Ruiz says that growing up is a process of domestication. We start out wild and young and free, and gradually society and our parents and teachers break us, just like horses are broken. We’re set free only once we’ve gotten used to wearing a harness. We forget that we once lived life for the sheer joy of it, rather than to please others or earn our keep.
But our wild roots are still within us. If we refuse to be intimidated by the collective dream of society, the dream that tells us that we are nothing unless someone gives us money for the work we do, then perhaps we can find the free soul locked deep inside.
Having children around helps us wake up. Kids aren’t aware that other adults won’t clothe and feed them just because they’re so darn cute. To kids, adults are the gatekeepers to a world full of riches: limitless candy, staying up late, videos and computer games and department stores full of coveted toys. All kids have to do is ask for what they want (with a little begging/pleading/tantrums on the side).
When’s the last time you thought you could get something you wanted just by asking for it?
Most of us think that we have to struggle or work hard for what we want. We think that we don’t deserve it, so we have to earn it.
No wonder we adults are so screwed up when it comes to love.
Get this: you don’t have to be worthy for a man to fall in love with you. Nope. You don’t even have to look sexy or wear the right brand of clothes or drive the right kind of car.
Your ultimate soulmate will find you someday and fall in love with you because … you are you.
Just by being yourself, you’ll inspire so many feelings of love and joy within him that he won’t be able to imagine being away from you for too long.
You won’t have to earn his love. He’d be horrified if you thought you did.
Loving you will be as natural as breathing for him. It will be a fact of life, just like saying that the Earth is round. He loves you, the Earth is round, and that’s just the way things are.
Kids already know this intuitively. They know – and usually they’re right – that everything will be provided for them. They expect adults to take care of them. They reach out their arms and say, “I love you,” without the slightest embarrasment or hesitation.
Isn’t that nice?
Wouldn’t you love to be that young at heart again?
You can. That’s why I created this website. To remind you that there’s always hope in life and love.
